In commemoration of the iconic Mustang’s 50th birthday, Ford is unveiling a brand new limited edition model at this year’s New York Auto Show.
The annual car show, which began April 16 and runs through April 27, has already made headlines with its sneak peeks and full-on debuts of exciting new makes and models (including a quick look at Mercedes-Benz’s new GT sports car), but fans of American muscle will be drawn immediately to the new/old Mustang.
The New Mustang is a car that both old and new fans of this iconic car will fawn over. Here’s the scoop.
A New Take on Tradition: Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition
It wasn’t just 50 years ago that the very first Mustang made its debut–it was EXACTLY 50 years ago, on April 17, 1964. And it was in the same city, too, at the New York World’s Fair. Since then, the Mustang has become one of the most famous and recognizable American-made cars in history.
To celebrate the anniversary, Ford has announced a limited run of 1,964 new Mustangs that pay homage to the classic models while embracing the future of car tech and luxury.
A car novice might not notice, but anyone with a passion for these pony cars will see almost immediately that the Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition pays special tribute to that first model with certain design flourishes.
For example, there are only two colors available for this new limited model: Wimbledon White and Kona Blue. Now, if you know your Mustang history, you’ll remember that one of the very first vehicles off the production line (the one with the chassis stamped “001”, in fact) was painted in Wimbledon White.
The new Mustang also features a retro grill badge and a shiny replica gas tank cap.
50 Years Later: The Mustang’s Updated Features
While Ford was obviously having some nostalgic fun by offering these little throwbacks to the original Mustang, the new edition will also have plenty of modern features and an absolute powerhouse of an engine. In other words, it may share a spiritual connection with the original, but this Mustang would leave it in the dust in no time flat.
First, some of the luxurious features:
- Leather-wrapped steering wheel with cashmere stitching
- Cashmere seats
- Window construction technique unique to this model
- Sleek and attractive modern console
The actual performance of the car itself is also something to swoon over. It’s built on top of the Mustang GT fastback coupe and features a 5.0-liter, V8 engine which reportedly offers 420 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. This is one muscular car.
While you can get a peek at the Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition in New York right now, you won’t be able to buy it until it goes on sale this fall. But with only 1,964 vehicles being built, you’d better get in line now if you hope to take one home!
Are you a fan of the Mustang? What’s your favorite year? If you had the chance to be one of the 1,964 new owners of the 50 Year Limited Edition, would you do it?
