The Year of the Pickup: 7 Best Trucks of 2014

By on April 24, 2014

It’s easy to see the evolution of smaller sports cars through the years, as they tend to change shapes and technologies with each passing year. Pickup trucks, though, are a little less eager to transform from year to year.

This has a lot to do with their image and reputation for reliability and dependability.

It also has a lot to do with the old adage: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

But even though the exteriors haven’t changed (too much) over the years, some of the most recognizable and popular pickups in the world have been undergoing changes on the inside.

They’re getting more powerful. They’re also getting more efficient with fuel. And, of course, they’re also getting more and more luxurious in the cabin.

Let’s take a closer look at what the best trucks in 2014 have to offer.

I’ll tell you right now, though, it’s a lot.

Top 7 Trucks for 2014

#7 Nissan Frontier

Base Model in Brief:

  • Engine – 2.5-Liter, I-4
  • Horsepower – 152
  • Drivetrain – Rear Wheel Drive
  • MPG – 19 City / 23 Highway
  • Transmission – Manual

The Frontier is a pickup in the compact truck class, for its relatively small stature.

But you know what they say about dynamite coming in small packages, right?

Well, the Nissan Frontier, though it may be compact, is an incredibly powerful truck.

Many of the 28 different Frontier trim/model options feature a tough-as-nails V6 engine under the hood, giving this small truck a very big performance.

Available in both automatic and manual, 4WD and 2WD, crew cab and king cab, the 2014 Nissan Frontier is a versatile, small, yet extraordinarily tough pickup that certainly deserves a closer look.

Im totally shocked that the 2005 GMC Canyon is not on this list! I had this truck for the first several years of its life and it has the 5 cylinder engine in it. Never has had any major problems with it, and now my son has had it for the first two years of his driving life and the truck has approx. 280k miles on it and still going strong! I am planning on getting the 2015 GMC Canyon when it comes out on the market!

Good for you, I had a 2005 Colorado I5, I had religiously follow maintenance check as per company requirements and also bought extra maintain insurance for 5 yrs or 100k whichever comes first. But at 107,000, check engine lite came on, Dublin Chevrolet diagnosedcame that it needs cam and rocker change. There was a 100k Warranty on the engine and transmission but it had pass the mileage coverage, warranty won’t cover it. Talking to Chevrolet Regional and Chevrolet HQ people for reconsideration, won’t even give me time of day. Even explaining to them that I had been a Chevy/GMC all my life.. I gave up and trade it with Toyota Tacoma and had been happy with it, no problem. I gave up Chevrolet and now have all my vehicles Hondas and Toyotas.. Loyalty, my foot!!!

Can’t believe you missed the Nissan Titan! I’ve had pickup trucks for over 30 years in our company and will never go back to another pickup. 8 years, 150,000 plus miles without an issue besides general care. Test drove one in 2006 after having one Ford numerous Chevys and GMC’s, couldn’t believe towing capacity etc. the only thing in its class was the Toyota for thousands more.

You people are nuts! The best truck is a 4 cylinder Toyota?!
In what universe have you latte-sipping Prius drivers ever owned a truck?

It seems your basis was fuel economy, or aligned with urban sensibilities–not towing, or cargo or durability.

    What absolute balderdash!

the best and most dependable auto I have ever owned without ever giving me problems was my FORD PICKUP TRUCK. 2001 f-250 SINGLE CAB.I NEVER HAD PROBLEMS, I only had to replace my battery once and my fuel filter. I could not of ever owned another auto that could hold a candle anywhere to {MY GIRL}. To me (FORD) is the best truck ever made . I miss my truck so much, now I have nothing to drive . MY ONLY FRIEND IS SINGLE AND HELPED ME WHEN MY HUSBAND GOT HIT WHILE RIDING HIS HORSE IN 2011.SO I LOANED MY TRUCK TO HER FOR 1 DAY AND MY TRUCK GOT TOTALED THAT DAY 5-6-14. P.S. My friend now knows the love I had for MY FORD PICKUP. 2-20-2015
