When it comes to cars, speed can be expensive.

A lot of components go into the speed of the car: horsepower, weight, aerodynamics, gear ratios, torque of the engine and — unfortunately in many cases — the cost.

The fastest production car in the world — widely considered the Hennessey Venom GT — reaches speeds up to 270.49 mph and accelerates from 0 to 60 in 2.7 seconds.

Each of these vehicles is built to order and takes about six months to complete. The company reports that about 11 of these cars have sold around the world. Only 29 total will ever be produced.

Each car costs around $1.25 million.

We tell you this to demonstrate how ridiculously expensive and rare some mega fast cars can be. Thankfully, there are some zippy cars that won’t cost you your retirement savings and take months to build.

Here are the top five vehicles under $30,000 to quickly carry you where you need to go.

We should warn you that driving these vehicles, you might not be able to resist high speed driving. We are not responsible for any ensuing speeding tickets.

#5 Fiat 500 Abarth

Price, Fuel Economy, Power:

  • MSRP: From $22,395
  • MPG: 28 city/34 highway/31 combined
  • Curb weight: 2,512 lbs
  • Horespower: 160 HP
  • Torque: 170 lb-ft

The secret to the speed of the Fiat 500 Abarth is it’s small stature.

160 HP would not mean much in a heavier vehicle. However, in a car weighing in at just 2,512, it packs a serious punch.

To give you some perspective, the EPA estimates that the average car weighs around 4,000 pounds (almost double the Fiat 500).

Speeding from 0 to 60 in 6.9 seconds and topping out at 129mph, this car is almost guaranteed to land you a speeding ticket.

Starting at only $22,395, this is steal of a deal and the impressive gas mileage will save you even more money.
