Top Five Most Fuel Efficient AWD Vehicles

By on March 18, 2014

#2 Subaru Impreza

Not surprisingly, Subaru makes it on the list again with their Impreza model.

It ranks among the top cars on the list because it offers AWD protection and a combined fuel economy of 31.5 for less than $20,000.

The Impreza is so efficient, in part, thanks to its Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle engine. Like the Outback, it also has a CVT and is available in a manual and automatic version.

The only downside to the car is that it sacrifices some power in favor of the more efficient engine.

With only 145 lb/ft of torque, the little car can struggle up big mountain passes. Nonetheless, it handles well in general and the efficiency makes some of the lack of power well worth it.

Power, Cost, Efficiency:

  • MSRP: From $17,895
  • MPG: 27 city/ 36 highway
  • Horsepower: 148 HP
  • Engine: 2.0 L

#1 Infiniti Q50

Power, Cost, Efficiency:

  • MSRP: From $41,800
  • MPG: 19 city/ 27 highway
  • Horsepower: 328 HP
  • Engine: 3.7 L

When you consider the speed and power of the the Infiniti Q50, it’s hard to imagine that it could make this list of top most fuel efficient AWD cars.

The car is powered by 350 Horsepower, 258 pounds of torque, a 50 kW electric motor, a seven-speed transmission and a zero to 60 speed of 5.2 seconds.

Regardless of all these not so fuel efficient features, the Infiniti Q50 touts an impressive 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway for a combined 30 mpg.

Powerful, fast, efficient. What’s not to love?

Well one tiny issue is that the Q50 requires premium fuel so you will pay a bit more at the pump. It also has a starting price of $42,000, which is on the expensive side for this list.

You may find the added cost well worth it, however.

What do you think? Is AWD worth the added fuel costs? Any cars you think should be added to this list? Tell us in the comment section!
